SKIING THE VOLCANOS... GLACIER PEAK

I found that the toughest part of summiting Glacier Peak on skis was packing my skis up through all the overhanging limbs on the scratch trail up to Boulder Basin. I had to practically get down on all fours at times to get my skis to clear the brush and branches.

Memorial Day weather in 1994 was looking good so I decided to try doing a ski ascent of Glacier Peak. The day for the ascent was clear and not too cold. With my skins on my skis I made good progress up the Sitkum Glacier. I had the top to myself but there were other parties coming up and one of them snapped my picture.

As I made lazy turns down from the summit I passed another group of 4 heading up. I am not a very good skier but the layer of soft snow over a firm crust meant that even I could make some nice, satisfying turns. I remember this ski off Glacier Peak as one of my best ski outings ever.
